    Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions

At Pinvin C of E Academy, we are committed to ensuring that every child is fully included in school life and receives the support they need to be happy, grow and flourish. We recognise that some pupils may have long-term, short-term, physical or mental health conditions that require additional support during the school day. We work closely with parents, carers and healthcare professionals to ensure that each child's individual needs are understood and met.

Where a pupil has a significant or ongoing medical condition, we may develop an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHCP). These plans are created in partnership with families and relevant healthcare professionals and outline the support, procedures and adjustments needed to help children access learning, participate in activities and remain safe whilst at school. Plans are reviewed regularly and updated whenever a child's needs change.

We believe that children with medical conditions should enjoy the same opportunities as their peers. Reasonable adjustments are made wherever necessary to ensure pupils can take part in lessons, educational visits, sporting activities and wider school experiences.

Parents and carers play a vital role in this process. We ask families to keep the school informed of any medical conditions, changes to treatment, medication requirements or healthcare advice so that we can provide the best possible support.

    Medical Procedures

To ensure the safe management of medication in school, parents and carers must complete the relevant medication forms and provide up-to-date information about their child's medical needs. Forms can be collected from the School Office. Prescription medicines will only be administered when it is necessary for a child's health, wellbeing or attendance, and where written parental consent has been provided. All medicines supplied to school must be in their original packaging, clearly labelled and within their expiry date.

Where appropriate, we encourage pupils to develop independence in managing their own medical needs. Some children may carry and administer their own inhalers or other emergency medication, where this has been agreed as part of their healthcare arrangements and is appropriate for their age and understanding.

Medicines are stored securely, whilst ensuring that children can access essential medication quickly when needed. Staff receive appropriate training to support pupils with medical conditions and are made aware of the procedures to follow in both routine and emergency situations.

If a child becomes unwell during the school day, they will be cared for and monitored by trained staff. Parents or carers will be contacted where necessary, particularly if a child is unable to remain comfortably in class or requires further medical attention. In an emergency, the school will follow the child's healthcare plan and seek immediate medical assistance where required.
